Memories from the Highland Clearances

We are living in an unfolding field of trauma right now and it is bringing the silenced stories of our ancestors ever closer. Memories from points in our collective stories are reanimating in our present.

Patterns that connect back to loss of place, hunger, persecution and forced displacement are stirring.

The silent and unseen stories of the Scottish Highland Clearances from the late 18th & early 19th century are so important. It marks a dark period of history in the UK when money and income was prioritised over people and community. The eviction of whole communities, hunger, betrayal, the banning of a culture, way of life and the voices of generations of people.

The impact ripples through Scotland, the UK as a whole and the countries that the displaced Scots migrated to, including Canada and America.

The themes we’ll step into in this class will be supportive for those struggling with a sense of loss of place, fear of lack and experiences of being ‘unseen’.
